Abstract
Simple abdominal X-rays that included kidneys, ureters, and bladder(KUB) were obtained in 557 outpatients to investigate the frequency of constipation and its relation to various abdominal symptoms. Four-hundred and six patients presented with various abdominal symptoms as their chief complaints and the remaining 151 patients had other symptoms. The: distribution of fecal material within the large intestine was scored and the fecal retention. was classified as mild, moderate, and severe.
Chief complaints and final diagnosis when established failed to predict the severity of fecal retention but moderate or severe fecal retention was observed in 64% of all 557 patients and in 61% of 265 patients in whom no other cause of abdominal symptoms was identified.
Constipation as defined by moderate or severe fecal retention on KUB may or may not be-symptomatic but may be a much more common cause of various ¢¥abdominal symptoms in Koreans than has been known. A KUB may be a simple and inexpensive tool in the diagnosis of constipation.
